The fence art of Jane Hart: beautiful cutouts - Fresh Dirt ...

By Jim McCausland, Sunset MagazinePhotographs by David Meyer It all started three years ago: One of Jane Hartâ?Ts neighbors had some old fence wood she didnâ?Tt need, and another had a scroll saw she was willing to loan out. Jane put the two together and launched a new phase in her Portland, OR, garden art business. Since then sheâ?Ts designed fences, gates, arbors, sitting areas, potting sheds, even wing walls to hide compost bins. With her husband David Meyer doing the construction, Jane can see the whole process through in a way her clients love. â?oMy mother was a scavenger,â? says Jane, â?oway before the Rebuilding Center opened in Portland. She did cutouts on our house, on railings, even under the bannister. Big Tits You see the same thing on old houses all over Portland.â? The idea stuck in Janeâ?Ts mind, and she ran with it. When a client hires her, she starts by spending time with them. â?oItâ?Ts fun to go to peopleâ?Ts houses and see their influences,â? she says. â?othen I do the design. In fact, itâ?Ts so fun that I obsess over it. Somebody wants a drawing, I make 20. Itâ?Ts hard to stop!â?She does cutouts to fit just about any space. â?oI can do a whole fence, or just make one section more interesting.â? And though she started out using old fence wood, sheâ?Ts willing to work with new wood as well. â?oBut everybody likes old wood. In three years, Iâ?Tve only done one job with new wood.â?You can reach Hart through her web site, Jane Hart Design.

Wire Fence - cheap fencing, benefits, installation, & plants ...

A picket fence might look nice, and a ranch style fence might keep the cows in, but when it comes to flat out functionality, a wire fence is the way to go. Wire fencing is durable, low maintenance, and comparatively inexpensive. They are a great way to mark property lines, as well as keep pets and stray animals in (or out). Wire Fence Cost Effectiveness A wire fence is one of the least expensive types of fencing available. They are cheaper to install and take care of than wood and often create a superior barrier. Due to their cost, they are widely used in commercial settings, but many homeowners have also caught on to their many selling points. Wire Fencing Benefits Aside from being inexpensive, a wire fence is extremely easy to maintain. Basically, once they are put in, theres not much else to do. When a wire fence gets dirty, you can either hose it down or wait for rain. Heat and cold have virtually no effect on their performance. The gaps in wire fences are generally much too small for anything larger than a potato to fit through. Rabbits, stray dogs, and other garden and property undesirables will be kept out, while the family pooch will stay in. Wire fencing is available in many different styles for use in many different situations. There are very inexpensive, do-it-yourself fences that can be put around small gardens in a few hours to keep rodents out. There are high-quality, heavy-gauge wire fences that can be used for security (these types of fences are often put up in places where rigid security is a must, like drug enforcement cages in police stations and other controlled access areas). The list goes on and on. Need privacy or protection? We can help! Click here toInstall a Fence Drawbacks of Wire Fences For most people, the biggest reason to not install a wire fence is the aesthetic appearance. Most likely due to their popularity in commercial and industrial settings, the look of these fences is often associated with less than homey feelings. Beauty is, if nothing else, always in the eye of the beholder. For many homeowners, the convenience and durability of a wire fence is beautiful enough. Another downfall of wire fencing is that, while it certainly makes an excellent barrier, it really doesnt provide any privacy from those wishing to look in. Unlike other types of fencing, everything that happens on one side of the fence is easily visible from the other side, unless some modifications are made.

Look! Two Awesome Recycled Fences , Apartment Therapy Re-Nest

Look! Two Awesome Recycled FencesHere in Carrboro, NC, we have lots of creative and artistic folks around that arent afraid to experiment with alternative building products. Check out these two unique fences.Im currently investigating green options for a fence but they are hard to come by. I check Freecycle for decks that are to be demoed, have considered using pallets, and the cost of Trex/synthetic lumber is seemingly cost prohibitive. The owner of this great fence wasnt home but Im guessing the panels are all recycled. Regardless, its a beautiful and creative fence. This fence lives at a local cafe/garden/hangout called Johnnys.

Three Beautiful Fence Styles UBuild

Our last example requires another skill.bricklaying. If you everwanted to learn the art of bricklaying, these simple short fence postsare ideal to practice on. We will not cover "how to lay brick" inthis section, but a good way to get started is to get a book from yourlocal library on the subject. I'll provide two tips that do not seemto be in most books. 1. Mix your mortar wetter than you think. 2. Don'tover work the brick after it is laid and tapped into position. Once it'sstraight, plumb and in line, move on to the next. For each brick postyou will need a footer that is 4" wider than your post, and atleast 6" thick. Be certain to go below the frost line for your areato prevent frozen ground from heaving the posts. For the fencing material I would recommend plastic, or plastic coatedwood sections available at Lowe's Home Centers. They come in a varietyof styles, and never need maintenance. The mounting hardware will beavailable from the fence manufacturer. Your spacing between brick postswill be either 6 feet or 8 feet depending on the fence sections you use.
